The roots of chocolate are firmly planted in Central America; by the time the conquistadors arrived in the 16th century the Mesoamericans had been cultivating cocoa for at least a thousand years. This sweet elixir was so highly prized that chocolate not only became a symbol of power and authority but cacao beans were used as currency. Today, chocolate is still highly prized. And during this excursion, you'll discover how to make chocolate the way the Mayans did centuries ago. The fun begins with a guided island tour that leads to a cacao plantation. Here, you'll have a chance to learn the complete life cycle of the amazing cacao tree. Then, you'll take the fermented and dried beans, and roast, grind and make a chocolate bar. While waiting for your chocolate to set, join your guide for a tour through the botanical gardens, followed by a delicious traditional lunch.
