Glide along the tranquil Faaroa River on this half-day kayak adventure that makes the most of Raiatea's natural wonders. Follow your guide along the waterway lined with dense foliage, verdant cliffs and a vibrant bird and wildlife population. Take in the scenic beauty, and bring your camera for wonderful pictures.

Discover the pristine natural beauty of Raiatea on a unique kayak adventure down the serene Faaroa River. Step back in time as you travel the same route as New Zealand's Maori settlers on the only navigable river in French Polynesia.

A short, scenic motorcoach ride brings you to the dock where you'll receive your safety briefing and equipment. Climb into your double kayak and prepare to paddle on this tranquil river for approximately two hours following behind your knowledgeable guide. As you travel, enjoy expert commentary on Raiatea's history, legends and outstanding local fauna and flora. Raiatea was the center of ancient Polynesian culture, and the locals built boats from the logs that floated down the Faaroa River, a practice noted by Captain James Cook when he arrived in 1769.

Begin in the peaceful fjord-like inlet known as the Faaroa Gorge, then continue ribboning through the lush rainforest and verdant jungle growth that flank the river. Keep an eye out for such unique tropical vegetation as the purau (wild hibiscus), which blooms yellow in the early morning, turns a fiery red in the afternoon and falls from the tree as the sun begins to set. You'll also see mape (Pacific chestnut trees) and tall bamboo groves. The warm air is scented with the fragrance of vanilla, and the area is home to colorful birds that make their home in this thriving ecosystem.

You'll return to the ship with memories and photographs of this profound day spent among nature's wonders.
