Discover the monuments that make up the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, without a doubt among the most important Neolithic sites in Western Europe, on a thrilling adventure into this dynamic period of prehistory. Begin with a scenic 30-minute drive into the interior of the main island. The Ring of Brodgar comes into view, an exceptional relic of the Stone Age, dating from 2700 B.C. and displaying 27 of its original 60 stones. Nearby, the Stones of Stenness, the oldest standing stones in Britain, stand 19 feet tall. Continue on to Skara Brae, a Stone Age settlement buried under sand for thousands of years until uncovered by a violent storm in 1850. Its visitor center and museum exhibits display a fascinating collection of relics. Finally, discover the Skaill House, the finest 17th-century mansion in Orkney. Return to the pier along the historic coastline of Scapa Flow.
