Leave the mainland behind for an excursion to the quaint island of Tjörn, the sixth largest island in Sweden. From Gothenburg you'll drive north past the 1,000-year-old town of Kungälv. (Have your cameras ready as you pass the impressive ruins of the 14th century Bohus Fästning Fortress). Another memorable camera-worthy shot is the 2,178-foot-long Tjörn Bridge. A photo stop here affords the opportunity to see the impressive views of the Askerö Fjord. Once over the bridge and into Tjörn, you'll be enchanted by the island's charming red clapboard farmhouses, sweeping meadows studded with granite boulders, and shimmering lakes. On the southern tip of Tjörn sits the 15th century fishing village of Klädesholmen, home to modern herring canning factories. Enjoy a guided walk through this charming hamlet before rejoining the coach and driving on to the main town of Skärhamn for free time and a sampling of herring, the local delicacy.
