Begin your 3.5-hour tour just 4 km from Burnie at Fernglade, a serene 50-acre reserve along the Emu River, home to over 60 bird species, wallabies, quolls, devils, possums, and a thriving population of wild platypus. Led by a knowledgeable guide with experience in wildlife management and conservation, enjoy a 500-meter amble through this lush habitat. Recognised as one of the top three wild platypus viewing locations in the world, Fernglade offers a true ecotourism experience just minutes from port.
Next, travel 8 km upriver to the Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden, where you'll be treated to a delicious morning tea infused with native bush flavours. Then, explore the tranquil 11-hectare garden, which showcases more than half the world's cultivated rhododendron species alongside complementary plantings from around the globe.
Created by volunteers 35 years ago, the garden is a year-round delight featuring lakes, waterfalls, gazebos, stone walls, and winding paths. While spring brings peak blooms, autumn's colourful display is equally breathtaking-so be sure to bring your camera!
