Once a whaling station in the Marlborough Sounds, the remote Arapawa Island is now the home of Arapawa Blue Pearl Seafarm, where the beautiful and unique paua pearls are cultivated and exclusively sold. After boarding a boat in Picton, you'll cruise through the Queen Charlotte Sound and during the hour-long journey, the friendly and informative skipper will share local history. Once you arrive on the island, you'll be greeted by Mike and Antonia Radon, the owners of Arapawa Seafarm, who will personally lead you on a tour. Learn first-hand about the regeneration and sustainability of paua farming and, depending on the time of year, it's possible to see paua of all sizes. A visit to the Pearl Shop reveals a jewelry collection of pearls that range in color from azure to aquamarine shades similar to paua shells. Following the tour, you'll be treated to light refreshments at the Radon homestead.
